Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (0) v Hearts (2)

Saturday 7th July 2018, Kick Off 3pm

Pre-season friendlies

THAT'S the unimportant stuff done.

Now it's on to the fairly important games, and then from Saturday, August 4, the real deal.

And at this juncture, it's looking OK for Dumbarton. Until the late stages of this game they trailed a strong Premiership side to a penalty.

Hearts then finally claimed victory when close season signing Uche Ikpeazu got his second of the game.

Defeat is never welcome in any match, and pre-season results are always taken with a pinch of salt, but two wins out of three and six goals has been a decent return from Sons over the last week.

It's the same as it ever was. Don't get carried away in victory, don't get too despondent in defeat.

The next four games will say a bit more about the prospects for League One. It is a tall order to qualify ahead of two further Premiership opponents, but it'll be given the very best shot.

Sons looked as if they had gone one down after seven minutes after Steven Naismith tapped in Ikpeazu's header across goal, but was flagged offside.

The clean sheet, though, only lasted another five minutes after Ikpeazu converted from the spot when Craig Barr was punished for a challenge on him in the area.

The game gave the players the workout they needed, but was much of a muchness in terms of chances. Iain Russell's shot was as close as Dumbarton came in the first half, rolling just wide, while an Ikpeazu free kick for Hearts went over off the top of the bar.

In the second half, a trialist striker was played in after a neat passing move by Sons, but the visiting keeper blocked at close range.

Grant Adam was also on form to keep out Jake Mulraney's initial effort with five minutes remaining, only for Ikpeazu to follow up and seal it.

Hearts headed back to Edinburgh with victory. Dumbarton will make that very journey next Saturday, although to face Spartans instead of the Jambos again, for a fixture which carries more clout.
