Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Stenhousemuir (2) v Dumbarton (1)

Saturday 1st September 2018, Kick Off 3pm

League One

HONOURS are never won in August - nor, for that matter, are they won on the first day of September.

But markers can be put down, and teams can make an early statement about what they hope to do.

Dumbarton did that at East Fife on the opening day of the season. Since then, their marker has vanished.

One point out of the next 12 wasn't quite how things were envisaged on the way home from New Bayview.

Nor was the fact that, for the second week in a row, Sons would be in a winning position only to come away with nothing.

Bobby Barr, just as he did seven days before, opened the scoring. His efforts in doing so, just as they did seven days before, counted for nothing, as Stenhousemuir turned it round through Seb Ross and Conner Duthie.

Seven minutes had elapsed when Barr put them ahead. Rory Loy flicked on Iain Russell's cross, and the winger drilled the ball home.

But the lead lasted four minutes as a high ball came into the area from the right, and Ross lobbed Grant Adam for the equaliser.

He then headed over from six yards from Kevin O'Hara's cross, before debutant Jack Aitchison saw his narrow-angled shot deflected wide.

O'Hara and Aitchison had further chances, while Andy Dowie's header from a corner was saved. Mark McGuigan also miskicked from another O'Hara assist for Stenny.

The second half was more graft than craft, but on 63 minutes Barr looked set to put Sons ahead again. He connected with Aitchison's low ball, but his finish was the wrong side of the post.

Ross then missed out on a double himself when he fired wide after Adam could only parry Ruaridh Donaldson's ball into the area.

But 10 minutes from full time, Sons failed to defend another low ball in from the left and Duthie fired home.

Dumbarton's squad remains riddled with injuries, but league points don't go to teams by way of sympathy.

They go to them for winning matches.
