Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (0) v Montrose (1)

Saturday 8th September 2018, Kick Off 3pm

Irn Bru Cup

LAST year it was Oswestry and Perth. This year Dumbarton's Irn Bru Cup bus didn't get out of the garage.

An early headed goal by Montrose was enough to ensure that last season's progress to the final of the competition wasn't going to repeat itself for Sons this time around.

The man scoring it was Craig Johnston, in the 16th minute for a Gable Endies side which made nine changes from its last league outing.

A walking wounded Dumbarton side, on the other hand, are still in what is hopefully the dying embers of an injury crisis.

Sons' priority this season is League One, and has been since they joined it in May. But victory here would have raised spirits after disappointing recent results in that field.

Instead the game was low on quality, chances - and spirits, which remained deflated.

Apart from however many rounds of the William Hill Scottish Cup, Dumbarton's season is now all about League One.

Sixteen minutes had elapsed when Johnston headed home Danny Cavanagh's cross from the right for Montrose.

Rory Loy and Calum Gallagher were then each denied by the keeper, the first from close range, the second from a narrow angled shot.

Loy then tried again early in the second half, but his shot from Cammy Ballantyne's assist lacked pace and was saved.

Ross Forbes' shot on the turn from 30 yards was very unlucky to hit the post. If that didn't sum up the general lack of breaks on the day, events eight minutes from full time did.

Iain Russell looked set to tap in Forbes' ball across goal, but a defender got there first. From the resulting corner, Andy Little's header hit the top of the bar and went over.

Enjoy all that? Good, because the teams are doing it all again in the league this Saturday.
