Pre-Season Friendlies

DUMBARTON'S pre-season campaign got off to a low-key start with this goalless draw at Annan Athletic.

Some 30 Sons fans made the trip south in the rain to watch a game that got off to an exciting start but gradually faded.

New signings Allan McManus, Ross Campbell and Paul Maxwell all played their first games for Sons, and there was also a second 'debut' for returning keeper Stephen Grindlay.

Sons began well, and an early Iain Chisholm effort from distance went over off the top of the bar after the keeper saved from Derek Carcary.

Then Maxwell's header set up Alan Cook for a shot, but the keeper made another save.

Annan responded with a Bryan Gilfillan effort from long range which went just over, while another shot by Cook was turned over.

Grindlay then made a smart save to deny Gilfillan from an effort from the halfway line.

The second half was a non-event, although Annan had a couple of close calls. A superb tackle by Martin McNiff denied Lewis Sloan what looked a certain goal, while Michael White got down to save from Mike Jack.

In a late attack, Sons' midfield trialist was just beaten by a defender to Kieran Brannan's low drive from the edge of the area. From the resulting corner, the defensive trialist headed over.
