Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Falkirk (3) v Dumbarton (1)

Tuesday 24th September 2013, Kick Off 7.30pm

Stirlingshire Cup

Dumbarton's defence of the Stirlingshire Cup ended in disappointing fashion after a young Falkirk side came from behind to reach the final.

Kevin Smith's early goal seemed to have Sons on course for a fourth straight final but the home side dominated and had completed their comeback by half time.

Kris Faulds, Scott Shepherd and Lewis Small got the goals that inflicted Sons' first Stirlingshire Cup defeat over 90 minutes since 2007.

Smith opened the scoring on only three minutes when he pounced on a mistake by a Falkirk defender and finished clinically from 12 yards.

However, the Bairns responded strongly and Stephen Grindlay saved from Thomas Grant at close range while Small hit the post. Grindlay then made another fine save from Small.

On 27 minutes the Sons keeper was beaten as Faulds blasted home an effort from distance.

Then seven minutes later a cross from the right was headed in by Shepherd as the Bairns further tightened their grip on the game.

Shepherd was then denied a quick second goal by another save from Grindlay but with two minutes left of the first half, Falkirk's lead was extended.

Small intercepted possession 20 yards from goal and ran in to slide a low finish past Grindlay.

Two minutes into the second half the Bairns were close to making it 4-1 but Faulds' shot hit the crossbar.

Sons forced some chances in the early stages of the second half as Garry Fleming shot narrowly over before Nick Phinn's 30-yard shot just missed the target.

Smith was also put through on goal but shot wide from the edge of the area before the match faded out to allow Falkirk through to the final.
