Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (0) v Bonnyrigg Rose (1)

Tuesday 6th December 2016, Kick Off 7.45pm

Scottish Cup

SONS crashed out of the Scottish Cup to a spirited Bonnyrigg Rose team at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium, losing 1-0.

Adam Nelson scored the game's only goal on 86 minutes, to send Rose through to the fourth round and a plum home tie against holders Hibernian.

It was a quiet start to the match from a Sons point of view, Rose looked dangerous on the break and the impressive Keiran McGachie came close with a shot that had Alan Martin beaten however the ball skidded across the face of goal and out of play.

Lewis Turner had the noisy and large away support on their feet when his 15th minute effort hit the bar with Martin beaten.

Sons' first proper attempt on goal came from Ryan Stevenson but his half volley was wide and the former Hearts man was at the centre of the action again when his free-kick was met by Robert Thomson whose header was easily held by Rose goalie Michael Andrews.

Dumbarton enjoyed a lot of possession in the run up to half-time and Andrews did well to push over the bar a snapshot from Robert Thomson before his namesake Joe couldn't quite connect with a tempting knock-down.

Joe Thomson was involved at the start of the second period but his long-range effort drifted wide.

At the other end, Darren Barr and Mark Docherty had to look lively to deny McGachie space and there was a let-off on the half-hour when referee Greig Aitken signalled a free-kick when Rose had the ball in the net.

On 65 mins, a Gregor Buchanan header from the centre of the penalty box was saved by Andrews with the top left hand corner of the net waiting to collect the ball.

Then Ryan Stevenson pulled a 20-yard free kick wide as the game entered the latter stages.

Adam Nelson broke the deadlock and Sons hearts with four minutes remaining curling a fine effort from the edge of the penalty box that eluded Alan Martin into the net.

Despite a late flurry from Sons, Bonnyrigg Rose held on to progress to round four of the Scottish Cup.
