SONS SHUT OUT DOONHAMERS

Tuesday 2nd January 2018

DUMBARTON extended their cushion in eighth place to six points with a hard fought but well earned 0-0 draw away to Queen of the South.

They did so despite the absence of Sam Wardrop, who was injured in training through the week. He was ably replaced by David Smith (pictured) at right back while new signing Liam Dick started at left back.

Although Sons held their own in the first half, the better chances fell the home side's way, with Scott Gallacher doing brilliantly to save from John Rankin.

But although chances remained at a premium after the restart, it was Gallacher's opposite number and ex-Dumbarton man Alan Martin who made the difference.

His ex-teammates Calum Gallagher and Christian Nade each thought they had given Sons the lead, only to be smartly denied by Martin.

The point puts Sons in a healthier position in the Championship after Saturday's opponents Dunfermline beat Falkirk 2-0.
