FOOTBALL FESTIVAL AT SHS

Sunday 29th May 2011

OVER 1000 fans attended the DFDL cup finals at Strathclyde Homes Stadium over the bank holiday weekend proving that Dumbarton FC are at the heart of the local community.

Despite some dreadful weather, every team who took part can be proud of their performance in what was a terrific advert for youth football.

The two-day festival kicked off at 10.00am on Saturday (28th) morning with a rip-roaring game between Dumbarton North and Westerton.

After a pulsating 70 mins of normal time and the score level at 2-2, a further 20 min extra-time period couldn't separate the teams so the dreaded penalty shoot-out ensued with Westerton winning the U-13s trophy 5-3.

And the afternoon's game between Oban Saints and Rento Caigandro was equally absorbing albeit without the drama of penalty kicks.

The Renton lads managed a 3-1 win over their Argyll foes to take the cup back to the village.

On Sunday we had a further two matches and the morning game saw Dumbarton Rock edge out league champions Blair Thistle 2-1 to lift the 16s trophy.

This game was played in dreadful overhead conditions and credit is due to both teams who battled against the elements.

Finally a noisy crowd saw Clydebank Phoenix triumph 4-1 against Argyle Athletic in the 15s category and again both sets of players had to contend with galeforce conditions.

Congratulations to the winners from everyone at Dumbarton FC ; we're looking forward to next season's event!
