Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

VITAL WIN FOR SONS KEEPS DREAM ALIVE

Sunday 22nd April 2012

Three vital points in a pulsating 2-1 win over Airdrie United saw Dumbarton's promotion push continue at the Rock this afternoon.

In front of 1,088 enthusiastic supporters, Sons fought hard against opponents who are also contending for a play-off place, and who had clearly arrived with victory in mind.

The first half was full of action, but ended goalless. After the break the intensity of the match increased even further.

Willie McLaren opened the scoring for the visitors with a close range free-kick on 56 minutes. Then on 61 minutes Bryan Prunty levelled for Sons with a well taken strike.

The winner came on 67 minutes as Alan Lithgow rose to head a cunning Mark Gilhaney free-kick, and Airdrie United's Paul Lovering deflected the ball into his own goal.

There was a stormy end to the match when the Diamonds' Ryan Donnelly was sent off for violent conduct against James Creaney. Then Scott Agnew was booked for an infringement as he bundled the ball home again for Dumbarton.

A win away at Stirling Albion next weekend would see Dumbarton secure their treasured play-off place before the final home game against Brechin City on 5th May.
