Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Montrose (1) v Dumbarton (0)

Saturday 3rd November 2018, Kick Off 3pm

League One

CUP finalists and still a Championship club in March. Bottom of League One in November.

Emotional investment in football can go down as well as up. There'll be a rise again at Dumbarton, and hopefully it will be soon under the new regime.

But that was difficult to contemplate on the way down the A9, home from a defeat at Montrose which put Sons 10th out of 10 in their division.

Graham Webster's goal for the Gable Endies on 52 minutes was the one which put them there. Dumbarton toiled, and had the ball for what seemed to be most of the afternoon, but the goal they needed rarely looked like coming.

So where do they go from here? Simple. They attend the C&G Systems Stadium on Saturday ready to face Stenhousemuir, knowing that a win will lift them at least one place.

However, the next few days have to be spent looking at the League One table with Sons' name at the foot.

Iain Russell's 200th career goal continued to elude him, with the striker missing two decent chances in the first half.

On 11 minutes his six-yard effort from a grounded position was saved, and after the keeper also stopped Calum Gallagher, Russell then saw an angled effort kept out.

Webster had entered the action as a sub for an injured Montrose player and provided a warning on half time when his shot went across goal and wide.

The warning was not heeded, and seven minutes after the restart, he met a cross from the left at the back post and thrashed it home.

Dumbarton's first semblance of an equaliser did not come until the 74th minute when Scott Allardice's header was saved.

That was really it, apart from Chris Smith preventing a second for Montrose in injury time by pushing Patrick Cregg's shot away.
