Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (1) v Stranraer (1)

Saturday 28th December 2019, Kick Off 3pm

League One

IN THE final game o 2019 and o the decade, Dumbarton earned a point from a 1-1 draw in an edgy game against Stranraer at the C&G Systems Stadium - one that they were a few minutes away from winning.

The wind played a dampening role in what became a strongly physical tussle, with the visitors edging possession and shots on target, but also receiving our cautions.

In a generally scrappy first half both teams had their chances, but neither side could find a breakthrough.

Ryan McGeever came closest for Dumbarton in the early stages of the match, but his header could not beat Stranraer keeper Currie.

The home side looked vulnerable to crosses from both sides during the first half hour.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, shots from Reghan Tumlity and Conor Scullion were scurried away.

McManus threw away a huge chance for the Blues just before half time, as he struck wide after a long ball was headed across goal.

At the beginning of the second half Stuart Carswell looked like he would put Sons in front, but some really sharp defending denied him.

By the hour mark Sons looked in control, but they were not managing to string together convincing or effective moves in the final third.

On 68 minutes Jones and Elliott came close or Stranraer as the men from the Rock continued to look vulnerable at the back.

Eight minutes later Scullion came close again for Dumbarton, driving the ball just over the bar.

Up until the final minutes it often seemed as if the match would fizzle out into a goalless affair.

Then suddenly it burst into life on 85 minutes when Joe McKee drilled the ball from the edge of the box and the rebound was fired home by Ryan Tierney.

But Dumbarton's lead lasted less than two minutes, as Stranraer pressed back and Hilton's looping header found the back of the net to make it 1-1.

The result from this game leaves Dumbarton in sixth position in SPFL League One at the end of the year, with 28 points from 19 games.

The Sonstrust Man of the Match was Kyle Hutton, who put in another hardworking performance.
