Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (0) v Forfar Athletic (1)

Saturday 20th March 2021, Kick Off 3pm

League One

THREE months Dumbarton waited for this game.

The chance to play football again. The chance to be out there, competing against another team for the points.

And then that moment. THAT moment.

Fifty-seven minutes of football had meandered along until it happened.

It probably wouldn't have happened 99 times out of 100. The bald fact is that it did happen.

Sam Ramsbottom's clearance cannoned off Ryan McGeever 20 yards out from Sons' goal and rolled into the net to give Forfar the victory. It's easy if you say it fast enough.

There was, once again, no lack of workrate or endeavour. What was not there was the cutting edge to rescue something from the game.

It is a fixture Dumbarton hope to put behind them and move forward. But the way this game was lost will take some putting behind anybody.

'Rich in chances' would not be an accurate description of the game's opening stages. As always, there was plenty effort, but neither goalkeeper was given an immediately warm welcome back to action.

Midway through the first half a corner for the Loons found Andy Munro, but his header missed the target.

For Dumbarton a Ross Forbes free kick came promisingly into the box but Jaime Wilson, at full stretch, couldn't quite connect at the back post. Late in the first half the keeper was then down well to save from Wilson.

Right on half time Forfar came the closest of either side in the first half, when Scott's volley from the edge of the area went wide off the bottom of the post.

Early in the second half, Dumbarton had shown some threat. And then Ramsbottom's clearance hit McGeever, who was 20 yards out, and rolled in. Not a lot else you can say, really.

Sons' efforts to respond saw Adam Frizzell shoot wide after Tomas Brindley's low ball found him in the box. The visiting goalkeeper then did well to block Sam Wardrop's angled effort.

Then in injury time, Ross Forbes wove away from the Forfar defence, but shot over from 12 yards.
