Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (0) v Airdrieonians (1)

Sunday 2nd January 2022, Kick Off 1.30pm

cinch League One

NEW Year. Same old problems.

Dumbarton went into this game missing possibly half a team of players who could have made a convincing case to start the game.

That, however, does not mask the fact that they lost at home for the fifth time in six league outings on their own pitch.

Dylan Easton got the goal for Airdrieonians that made the difference in a largely stale encounter which never came close to matching the drama of the sides' previous two meetings this season.

The odd chance was created, but it wasn't taken, and the troubles at the wrong end of cinch League One continue.

While Airdrie were on top territorially in the first half, a makeshift but organised Dumbarton defence was keeping them largely out of harm's way.

Indeed, half chances fell to Sam Muir and Carlo Pignatiello in the first quarter of the game, but neither could seriously trouble the visiting goal.

The visitors then took more command, and Sam Ramsbottom was alert to a Kerr McInroy effort from distance which he turned over the bar.

Easton also went close, while the ball did find the net from his corner close to half time only for the referee to rule that Ramsbottom was fouled.

Early in the second half Easton went close again, forcing a fine save from Ramsbottom, before a decent chance for Sons.

Ross MacLean raced in on goal at an angle after Pignatiello stole possession, but his shot was deflected wide, with the corner coming to nothing.

But with 21 minutes left, Airdrie struck. Easton made space for himself on the edge of the box and found the net with a placed shot.

The Diamonds had almost total control from there, with only the post denying Easton a second from a free kick.

Another such effort also saw Rhys McCabe go close for the visitors, with Ramsbottom again doing well to save.

There was one last opportunity to steal a result in injury time, again falling to Muir. His flicked header from Paul Paton's initial shot looked to be heading for the corner until a defender got a touch on it to clear.

The fight continues.
