Dumbarton Football Club - Sons of the Rock 1872

Dumbarton (0) v Morton (1)

Tuesday 20th February 2018, Kick Off 7.45pm

Ladbrokes Championship

Dumbarton are back down to Earth.

If Saturday's semi-final victory was euphoria, this was the stark reminder.

Sons by no means played poorly in this game, but they lost out on any points through the same frustrations that have hindered them in the Championship of late.

They could have been 3-0 up inside eight minutes. Instead they were 1-0 down after 73, and that was how it stayed.

To add to the frustration, Morton's goal was scored by Thomas O'Ware from a corner - far from the first time such a set piece has led to a concession.

It is still not too late to secure a seventh Championship season without the need to extend the season into May.

But whatever happens in the Irn Bru Cup, something needs to happen in the league now.

Saturday's trip to Falkirk has now taken on must-win status and even then, there is a long road back. But there is still a road.

After two minutes of this game, Dimitris Froxylias had a shot from 20 yards, and why not after Saturday? However, the keeper touched his shot over.

Liam Burt and Andy Stirling each had a shot saved before Froxylias again had a chance.

He was inches from goal, but...the ball took a bad bounce, and went over.

The Cypriot then tried again with a 20-yard volley after Morton headed only half clear, but it was just past.

After Scott Gallacher saved well from Gary Oliver, Burt also missed the woodwork by not very much. Bob McHugh then missed when well-placed for the visitors.

Sons were in control, but as long as chances weren't being taken, there was every possibility that this could be the latest lesson in their importance.

And with 28 minutes played of a pedestrian second half, that sermon was delivered, although Gallacher looked to have done what needed doing when he saved from Mark Russell.

Neither he nor anybody else could stop the unchallenged O'Ware heading home the resulting corner.

The closest Dumbarton got to equalising was a Danny Handling header from Stirling's cross which went wide.

The phrase is 'We go again'.
