SONS CRASH OUT OF SCOTTISH CUP

Tuesday 6th December 2016

A DEPLETED Dumbarton side exited the Scottish Cup against junior side Bonnyrigg Rose at the Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium this evening, losing 1-0 in the closing stages of the third round replay.

There were decent opportunities for both sides in the first half, but neither team could take full advantage of them.

Early on, the visitors hit the bar from Turner and were denied by Sons' keeper Alan Martin after a well taken free kick. McGachie also missed a golden chance.

Meanwhile, at the other end, Ryan Stevenson, Joe Thomson and Robert Thomson all came close for Dumbarton before the break.

In the second half the game ebbed and flowed, and Sons were let off the hook just before the hour when Rose got in behind and had the ball in the net before the referee whistled for a foul.

Ten minutes later boss Stevie Aitken called the changes for Dumbarton. In a double substitution Ryan Stevenson and Robert Thomson gave way to Craig Pettigrew and Donald McCallum.

Bonnyrigg applied intense pressure towards the end of the match. Then came the killer blow from Rose with four minutes remaining.

An excellent finish off the post from Andy Nelson at the edge of the area gave the Eastern Super League side a deserved goal.

The visitors successfully ran down the clock to claim a famous victory and a valuable William Hill Scottish Cup fourth round home tie against Hibernian in January.
