SONS OUT OF THE SCOTTISH CUP

Saturday 24th November 2018

DUMBARTON bowed out of the William Hill Scottish Cup in the third round at the Penny Cars Stadium this afternoon, going down 3-0 to Airdrie.

Continuing injury problems meant that Dumbarton could only field three substitutes for the game.

After a slow start all round, Sons started to apply some serious pressure on Airdrie's back line, but struggled to create chances in the final third.

Then on 27 minutes Kyle Wilkie neatly avoided a challenge and rifled in a low shot that flashed into the bottom corner of the net to give the home side the lead.

Seven minutes later Sons were 2-0 down. A header across goal was turned in by Darryl Duffy as Airdrie slipped in behind the defence.

Dumbarton made a lively start to the second half. A good driving run from Bobby Barr created an early chance, but Michael Paton blasted the ball over the bar.

On 66 minutes it looked as if Sons had pulled a goal back, but Grant Gallagher struck the bar from three yards out.

On Sons changed their goalkeeper, with Jamie McGowan replaces Chris Smith. A minute later the luckless sub was picking the ball out of the net, as Airdrie striker Kyle Wilkie's effort ricocheted in off the post.

There was no way back for Dumbarton from 3-0 down. Next weekend it's back to League One action at the C&G Systems Stadium, with a visit from Brechin City.
