LEAGUE RECONSTRUCTION TALKS STALLED

Tuesday 12th May 2020

AS has been widely publicised, Scottish football's recent reconstruction talks ended with insufficient support for any plan to reconfigure the leagues, to the frustration of many within the game.

Dumbarton FC was among a small number of clubs to consult directly with their supporters over this issue.

Club associate director Simon Barrow commented: "We want to extend a big 'thank you' to all Sons supporters who sent their ideas and views in on the issue of league reconstruction.

"There were a variety of detailed comments, but the overall feeling of those who responded was that this was a significant opportunity for change, with larger divisions being preferred by a majority.

"It is disappointing to many that this conversation has been stalled once more. With key decisions pending on how the game in Scotland will re-open, it is bound to come back onto the table at some point, and when it does we will continue to engage with our supporters."

According to the present SPFL constitution, change requires the approval of 11 of the 12 Premiership clubs, 17 in total from the top flight and Championship, and 32 of the current 42 in all divisions.

All ten League Two clubs backed a move to three divisions of 14-14-14. Many in other divisions favoured that, too. But the majority of Premiership clubs were against changing the current 12-10-10-10 format.
