GRASSROOTS OPTIMISM

Monday 22nd June 2020

THE chairman of youth pioneers Dumbarton United, who forged a partnership with the Sons last year, says he believes the shutdown of youth football could be a prelude to a boost for the grassroots game.

In an interview with the Lennox Herald, Gerry Docherty said that "there are going to be kids who are so desperate to get back out and play football again that we could have a resurgence."

The United chief added: "“I think the first stage is to get the kids back in training. I think we really need a definitive on that. It might follow the schools in August - but personally I don't see there being much of a change until after the schools are back."

Back in November 2019, Dumbarton FC and Dumbarton United officially revealed a new agreement handing United's youngsters the chance to start on a pathway to senior football with West Dunbartonshire's only SPFL side.

Sons chairman John Steele commented: "It's good to see Gerry and Dumbarton United in positive mood. This has been a hugely difficult period for all of us, but with good planning and determination both we and they can emerge ready for action."
