UNBEATEN START ENDS IN FIFE

Saturday 7th November 2020

DUMBARTON were perhaps a little unlucky to lose their unbeaten start to the league season, going down 2-1 away to East Fife this afternoon.

Having gone into the game off the back of three consecutive shut-outs, Sons lost a disappointing opening goal in 17 minutes. Jack Hamilton headed a cross from the left across Kevin Dabrowski and into the net.

From there Dumbarton had much more of the ball going forward but struggled to look much like getting a shot away.

Their closest opportunity came with three minutes left of the half when Jaime Wilson — who also had a goal chalked off for offside in the first half — was played in, but found the angle too narrow and fired past.

Early in the second half, Ross Forbes had a great chance but headed over from Chris Hamilton's cross. And when the ball did find the home net a few minutes later, it was ruled out for a push when Adam Frizzell put away Forbes' free kick.

But on the hour mark Sons were level when the keeper failed to hold on to Forbes' free kick and Wilson (pictured) followed up.

East Fife regained the lead on 68 minutes when Ryan Wallace swivelled to volley home from six yards.

With five minutes remaining another goal was disallowed. Denny Johnstone dived to head home a free kick but again the whistle sounded for a foul. There were no more opportunities, and Sons experienced defeat in the league for the first time this season.

League One is now on hiatus for a fortnight, but Dumbarton have another double header this week as they complete their Betfred Cup group campaign.

Tuesday's home tie with Falkirk is followed by a trip to Kilmarnock next Saturday.
