SONS HOLD OUT FOR VITAL VICTORY

Thursday 8th April 2021

DUMBARTON ended their goal drought with a crucial 2-1 win over visitors East Fife.

Ross Forbes returned after a two-match suspension, James Wallace gained his first start up front, and Morgyn Neill wore the captain's armband as Jim Duffy shuffled his side to play East Fife in this vital League One game at the wet and windy C & G Systems Stadium — their sixth game in twelve days.

Ross was quick to make an impact with an early corner headed over his own bar by Ross Dunlop. But from the resulting corner the midfielder picked out Ryan McGeever (pictured) who headed home to give his side the perfect start — only their seventh league goal of the season.

In the 8th minute at the other end a Dunlop cross was missed by Greig Spence. Both sides had further chances, but the score remained at 1-0 after 22 minutes. In the 37th minute Robert Jones forced a mistake from keeper Jordan Hart, but the strike by McGeever, on his 50th appearance, smashed off the bar.

Rabin Omar replaced the injured Ruaridh Langan in the 42nd minute, and half-time arrived with Son still in the lead.

McGeever continued to be a key figure, being booked two minutes into the second period, then missing out with a header from a Forbes free kick. Sons were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute when Rabin was brought down in the box, but the Forbes spot kick was saved by Hart.

Two minutes later Forbes made amends when he set up Adam Frizzell who made it 2-0. Good defending kept Sons on top, and in the 87th minute Stuart Carswell, Jaime Wilson and PJ Crossan replaced Nat Wedderburn, Jones and Wallace.

Tensions rose in the 90th minute when the Fifers netted from a corner, but the home side held out to grab three priceless points.
