UNBEATEN START ENDS AT STAIR PARK

Tuesday 20th September 2022

DUMBARTON'S unbeaten start to the league season has been ended with a 3-2 defeat at Stranraer despite a fightback from 2-0 down.

The home side were the better outfit in the first half, but it was after the restart before they opened the scoring through James Hilton.

Stranraer continued to dominate against a Sons side who were unusually struggling to create chances, and the deficit was later doubled by a goal from Matty Grant.

However, the visitors fought back, starting with 15 minutes remaining when Martin McNiff scrambled home from a corner.

And with five minutes left, they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Ryan Wallace in the box. Dylan Forrest was sent off for that foul, and Joe McKee equalised from the spot.

Sons now had a great opportunity but failed to take it and conceded a penalty of their own in the last minute before injury time.

Paul Woods converted to win the game for Stranraer, who remain undefeated at home in the league this season.

Sons' lead at the top of cinch League Two is now cut to eight points after Stenhousemuir won 2-1 at East Fife in this evening's other fixture.

They now have a free Saturday to regroup and get ready to visit Forfar Athletic on Saturday, October 1, in the final fixture of the first quarter of the league season.

We wish to extend sincere thanks to our supporters who made the demanding trip to Stair Park on a midweek night.
